Apple iPad 3 may get March release date, 4G

Apple's iPad 3 will reportedly hit the market in March and work with Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks.

According to Bloomberg, the iPad 3 will land in the calendar first quarter. Bloomberg cited manufacturing partners in Asia. In addition, the iPad 3 will sport a quad-core chip.
The iPad 3 is expected to be one of Apple's big revenue drivers for the upcoming year. While the iPad 3 is critical, most analysts expect the iPhone 5, which is also expected to be 4G friendly, to drive sales more.
Volume manufacturing is expected to ramp up in February, according to Bloomberg.
If Bloomberg's report is on target, Apple is likely to see a slowdown in iPad 2 sales, which may already be taking a hit from Amazon's Kindle Fire. There has also been speculation that Apple will keep the iPad 2 around and play multiple price points.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster handicapped Apple's iPad plans in a recent research note. He said:
Our model currently assumes iPad 3 will simply replace iPad 2; however, if Apple expands the iPad lineup to both higher and lower price points, the new iPads could support growth well above our current estimates. Our current CY13 revenue growth estimate for the iPad is 11%, with the bull case at 30%.
In a research note, Wedbush Securities analyst Craig Irwin said that the iPad 3 is likely to be a boon for battery suppliers. The iPad 3 is likely to have much more battery material in it. Irwin said suppliers like Simplo, Dynapack, and Polymore are likely to benefit.

Is this Nokia’s iPhone Killer?

It’s been a long time coming, but we’re willing to bet this sleek piece of smartphone sex is the Nokia N9. The Internet is sizzling with rumors about its imminent launch. But what makes it a killer device?
Specs that blow your brains out
Nokia needs to pull out all the stops to get back where it belongs and if half the rumors are true, the Nokia N9, (codename Lankku) is going to be a beast. Thanks to some clever detective work by the guys at NokiaPort, who unearthed the specs from a MeeGo bug report, it looks possible that the N9 will have a dual-core 1.6 GHz Intel Moorestown processor, a 200 MHz graphics unit that drives a 480×854 pixel display, 1 GB RAM and an Infineon 3G modem that supports HSPA+ speeds (21 Mbps downlink). The speed of that Intel processor alone will make the iPhone 1.Ghz seem as fast as a tortoise on crutches.
All operating systems are MeeGo
Added to the amazing stuff under the hood, the N9 is going to have the world’s newest operating system, MeeGo. Imagine taking all the best features from Android and Apple OS and creating something breathtaking. If it operates as great as it looks, smartphone lovers everywhere are going to be swooning with anticipation

Research budget to die for
As the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, Nokia might be taking a kicking from all sides, but that doesn’t stop it investing billions in R&D. In fact, it spent nearly 4 billion dollars in 2010, ten times more than HTC and five times more than Apple. For that sort of cash, you’d expect anything launched this year to be simply amazing.
Sherlock Holmes would be proud
Even if all this is true, how do we know that concept sketch is the Nokia N9? Well, it was posted on Nokia’s official blog last year to test the water. It got lots of love. Then last week the main man at Intel, Anand Chandrasekher, (Nokia’s partner on MeeGo) was photographed holding up an unidentified smartphone, which looks very, very similar to this stylish design.

Just a coincidence? Maybe. But think about it. Intel need to get in on the smartphone action. Wouldn’t it make sense to make a grand entrance with a device that will blow the competition away?
We think so. And hopefully in a couple of weeks, at the Mobile World Congress, we’ll find out.

Top 20 Android Apps in the U.S.

Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and analytics around what consumers buy and watch, recently released the first mobile media rankings based on audience measurement data from the company’s new Nielsen Smartphone Analytics. This new service uses metered data from thousands of Android and iOS smartphones in the United States to report actual consumer behavior.
According to the first mobile audience measurement data from metered smartphone usage, after the Android Market app itself, apps for Facebook, maps and mail had the highest active reach among U.S. Android users above the age of 18. (“Active reach” is defined as the percentage of Android owners who used an app within the past 30 days.”)
While many of the top 20 apps showed similar active usage by both male and female Android smartphone owners, there were notable differences in active reach for social apps. Facebook's mobile app saw an active reach of 81 percent for women Android smartphone owners compared to just 69 percent for male Android smartphone owners. Twitter also reached more women (16.5 percent) than men (13.4 percent). However, Google+, the newest social network, had more than twice the active reach among men (15.8 percent) than women (7.2 percent).
Outside of social media, apps like Kindle and Words With Friends had higher active reach among women, while Quickoffice Pro and the Amazon App store had higher active reach among men. Google Maps had a higher active reach among men, too: 77 percent active reach among men compared to 71.8 percent among women.
